As a small club Sailing Club Workum (ZVW) organizes more then 20 years a lot of big events. In cooperation with their team our Race Officers Gerlof van Wieren, Gerard Galema, Klaas Polet and Gerrit Heerenga preside a lot of important events. Since 1994 the club has a remarkable starting vessel which is suitable for use at the ‘IJsselmeer’ and also for the inshore lakes. This vessel is used as a starting and finishing vessel but also can be used as a shelter for tired sailors or sailors who had bad luck with their boat.

Experience

During the last 20 years the ZVW organised a lot of remarkable events with an average of more than 100 Dutch and foreign competitors each event. One of our most popular classes is the Dart class. Highlights in the history of our club were the European Championship Dart in 1993 in cooperation with WV Uitdam and the World Championship Dart 2008 in Workum. The EC Optimist in 1993 with 400 competitors was the start for organising bigger events. The World Championship Topper in 2001 with a lot of competitors was a great event. Unfortunately there were no Dutch competitors. The Open Dutch Championship 2003 in the Optimist, Splash and Flash class was one of the biggest highlights from last years. Nowadays this event is known as the Dutch Youth Regatta with 800 competitors. Besides the Optimist, Splash and Flash class there are also other youth classes like the Laser Radial, Cadet, 420 and 29er.  The WK 2003 Splash, Flash and Vaurien in Stavoren in cooperation with the Royal Sailing Club Sneek (KWS) was a very successful event. Once or twice a year the United 4 is our guest. This popular event has 400 competitors in several youth classes.

Last years we frequently organised World Championships and European Championships like the Optimist, Dart and Europe. Also small events were very successful. Generally an event will be organised in good cooperation with the Class Organisation. Sailing Club Workum has a lot of own material and volunteers to organise a complete event and (if necessary) even two or three Race Areas are possible. The Racing part is always the responsibility of the Sailing Club Workum.

Location

Camping 'It Soal' is located close to the IJsselmeer and at the end of the camping is a public area. Sailing Club Workum has permission to use this area for sailing events. A number of porta cabins (depending of the size of the event) are used to host the race committee, the jury and the organising committee. This is also the central meeting point for all competitors, volunteers, officials and visitors. Competitors can camp nearby the Regatta Area.
